How much of what we taste is on the plate, and how much is in our heads?

Long before the first bite, we have already decided what something will taste like. We are drawn to certain colours, shapes and surfaces, we link them to flavours we know, and we choose with that in mind. On 12 and 13 November we want to find out with you what happens when those expectations meet the food and the wine.

The Visual Language of Taste: Designing Perception gathers Pottery & Poetry and Amor y Sal around one table, with food and ceramics made especially for the evening and a selection of wines to go with them. You pick with your eyes, follow aromas and textures, and pair bites wherever your curiosity takes you. Every choice leads somewhere slightly different, and some of the thinking behind the evening only becomes clear once you are in it.

Raya Silova and Nikolay Madjarov-Faycheto of Amor y Sal and architect Maria Baleva, founder of Pottery & Poetry, have built a game of food and design that lets you trace your own associations and compare them with everyone else's at the table. Will you find the same things on the plate and in the glass? Do we all see, and taste, the same thing?

The workshops carry on the work of Materia Mensa and CALASSI on how our senses and the objects around us shape the way we perceive flavour. You don't need to know anything about wine, ceramics or cooking. Bring your curiosity and trust your own senses.

Join us on 12 and 13 November 2026 at 7:00 pm at the Pottery & Poetry studio, 13 Samokov Street, Diamant 2 building, Sofia, as part of MELBA Design Festival. Places are limited, so book early.

Come hungry, it's going to be delicious :)
