Bauhaus at Artipelag: INNER CHILD – Playing with Design

Our Bauhaus collection has gone to Sweden, and we can’t think of a better reason than an invitation to play. Pottery & Poetry is part of INNER CHILD – Playing with Design, the international exhibition at Artipelag, on view from 10 October 2026 to 11 April 2027. We are the only participants from Bulgaria.

A selection by Lidewij Edelkoort and Philip Fimmano

The exhibition is created by Lidewij Edelkoort and Philip Fimmano, a curatorial duo with an international reputation for identifying emerging directions in design, fashion, interiors and lifestyle. Edelkoort has been forecasting creative trends since 1980. She founded Trend Union and later served as Dean of Hybrid Design Studies at Parsons School of Design in New York, where she established a Textile Master’s programme and New York Textile Month.

Fimmano is a trend analyst, curator and writer, and co-founded Talking Textiles with Edelkoort in 2011. Together, they have developed exhibitions for major design institutions, including 21_21 DESIGN SIGHT in Tokyo and the Design Museum Holon. Their work brings research, cultural observation and design objects into one clear point of view.

106 designers and studios from 23 countries

INNER CHILD brings together 106 designers, artists and studios from around the world. The selection includes Satoshi Kondo × ISSEY MIYAKE, Dinosaur Designs, Jaime Hayon, Faye Toogood, Maarten Baas, Front, Alex Proba, Yinka Ilori, Max Lamb, Gustaf Westman, Victoria Yakusha and Pierre Yovanovitch, among many others.

The exhibition design was created by Dutch designers Kiki van Eijk and Joost van Bleiswijk together with their children, Ko and Puk. Their collaboration carries the exhibition’s spirit into the space itself.

Why Bauhaus?

The Bauhaus school, founded by architect Walter Gropius in Weimar in 1919, called artists and architects back to the workshop and to direct work with materials. Basic forms and clear colours became a vocabulary for making objects that could be both useful and expressive.

Our collection looks to these ideas through its shapes, colours and relationship between form and function. Every piece is made by hand, so small differences in shape and glaze are part of its character. They show the process and the person behind the object.

For Pottery & Poetry founder and creative director Maria Baleva, porcelain is another way to explore the relationship between an object’s form and its use. Her architectural practice at FUNKT has long been guided by a craft-based approach to design. Working with ceramics brings that interest closer to the material itself, through a process that leaves room for touch, testing and unexpected results.

We are proud to see our Bauhaus collection included in a selection of this scale, alongside designers whose work we have followed and admired for years. INNER CHILD – Playing with Design is on view at Artipelag, Sweden, until 11 April 2027.

Bauhaus comes out to play

Our collection takes its name from a movement that brought art, craft and design into the same conversation. In our studio, that conversation happens through clay: bold areas of yellow, red and blue meet warm ivory surfaces, and the shapes keep the small irregularities that come with making each piece by hand.

We enjoy seeing what happens when these objects meet on a table. A plate, a cup or a serving bowl can change the whole arrangement, and there is no need for everything to match. The colours give you plenty to work with, while each handmade piece brings its own shape and character. Putting them together is part of the fun.

That is what makes INNER CHILD feel so close to the way we work. Making ceramics involves attention, practice and plenty of technical decisions, but there is also room to try something simply because you want to see how it turns out. An unexpected combination or an uneven edge can become the detail you like most.

We’re delighted that Bauhaus is part of this gathering, and grateful to Artipelag, Lidewij Edelkoort and Philip Fimmano for including our work. As for visiting, Maria already has her mind made up: “I will definitely go and see it. With so many designers in one place, I suspect I’ll need quite a bit of time to look around.”
