Why do we keep some things for life?
Every home has that one cup nobody dares throw away. It might be cracked, it might not match anything else in the cupboard, but every morning someone is digging through the dishwasher to find it. Researchers at Delft University of Technology (TU Delft) set out to measure why, and tested a range of possible reasons.

In 2008, Rick Schifferstein and Elly Zwartkruis-Pelgrim looked at seven possible reasons we grow attached to certain objects:През 2008 г.
- how useful it isползата
- how reliable it isнадеждността
- what it's worth on the marketпазарната стойност
- whether it supports our sense of who we areдали предметът подкрепя самоличността ни
- the memories it holdsспомените
- the pleasure of using itудоволствието от употребата
- whether it reflects our values and outlook on lifeжитейските възгледи (предметът да отразява ценностите ни)
Only two of them really counted: the pleasure of using it, and the memories it carries of people, places and moments. Price and usefulness added nothing to the bond.

And here's the interesting bit. The strongest attachment was to things we've had for less than a year, and to things we've kept for a very long time, more than 20 years. With new things it's mostly the joy of using them. With old ones it's the memories that have built up around them. The researchers also noticed that people hang on to their favourite things even when they no longer work properly.
In two experiments with cameras and phones, Ruth Mugge, also from Delft, and her colleagues found that good function and good looks turn into attachment only when they give us pleasure. Being happy with a purchase doesn't create a bond on its own. But once an object becomes part of how we see ourselves, when it says something about who we are and what we care about, or connects us with the people and communities we belong to, a real bond has something to grow from.

So what does this mean for a cup?
Everyday objects have the best seat in the house. The cup for your first coffee passes through your hands more often than almost anything else at home. Your coat comes out a few months a year, your good shoes wait for an occasion, but the cup is there every single morning, Mondays included.

A small ritual grows around it: the kettle coming to the boil, the smell of coffee, the warmth in your palms, the first sip by the window before the day has really started. Psychologists have found that little rituals like these actually make food and drink taste better.
We think hard about which clothes suit us and what they say about us. The things we start the day with deserve the same attention, because every day starts with them. The same cup, every morning. The rest, the memories, are yours to add.
