sgraffito

An ancient carving technique reimagined with bold lines and contrasts—each handmade piece reveals layered stories in the clay.

A timeless technique reimagined with a contemporary edge.

Sgraffito is one of the oldest methods of ceramic decoration—where layers of colored slip are applied to the porcelain surface and then carefully carved by hand to reveal patterns, lines, or textures beneath. At Pottery & Poetry, we approach it as drawing in clay: spontaneous, rhythmic, and always unique.

Each piece is first shaped in porcelain, then layered with tinted slip and carved freehand—no stencils, no repeats. The result is a textured surface that feels both graphic and organic, with tactile detail you can see and touch.

No two are ever the same.

These pieces are bold but understated, perfect to mix with more minimal sets or to stand on their own. Durable, food-safe, and dishwasher-safe—crafted to bring art and function together at the table, every day.

Special collection for Black Sea Catch

Created every year for St. Nicholas Day — the traditional day to honor the patron saint of the sea and enjoy a fish-based feast — this special series celebrates maritime heritage through contemporary design.

Each plate is handmade and one of a kind, using the sgraffito technique. This year’s edition features two artistic lines: abstract sea-inspired forms and stylized fish motifs, all engraved by hand on porcelain. A tribute to tradition, reimagined for modern tables.

Quantities are limited.

Sgraffito connects us across centuries — its carved lines catch the light, invite the hand, and remind us that true design isn’t invented once, but rediscovered again and again. Curious to learn more?
