kurinuki

Rooted in Japanese tradition, each piece is carved from solid clay by hand. Bold, textured, and shaped by the maker’s touch—no two alike.

Kurinuki (literally “carving out”) is a centuries-old Japanese handbuilding method where artisans begin with a solid clay block and hollow it from within to form vessels—typically sturdy, functional pieces like tea cups, sake vessels, or decorative objects.
The surfaces are intentionally rough and sculptural, bearing the deliberate marks of carving—this raw, tactile quality is highly prized by pottery lovers .

Our kurinuki collection

Clay & Porcelain Mix: We use a palette of colored clays and porcelain blocks as the base for each piece, letting each tone shine through the carved surfaces.

Modern Glazes: To reinterpret the tradition, we apply contemporary slips and vibrant glazes—sometimes layering porcelain slip with colored slips, underglazes, or bright glazes—for a dynamic modern feel.

Form & Function: While honoring kurinuki’s roots, our range extends beyond vessels for liquids—we also craft decorative objects—always focusing on hollowing out solid material to retain that handcrafted essence.

The collection is made to order only.

Why It Matters?

Every piece in the KURINUKI line reflects a deep respect for this meditative, subtractive process—making each object unique and expressive. The intentional roughness, combined with inventive glazing, beautifully bridges traditional craftsmanship and contemporary design.
